Working on behalf of Salisbury City Council and the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Aquascience successfully tendered for and constructed 600m of recycled plastic boardwalk along the bank of the River Avon (SSSI). The boardwalk was originally 480m long but, based on the success of the project and the public reaction, a further 120m were constructed the following summer.
The recycled plastic was supplied by Centriforce, who later made Aquascience one of their recommended installers. Over 1,200 recycled plastic posts were used to support the walkway, each one driven to refusal using a hydraulic post rammer. The design incorporated sweeping curves mimicking the sinuosity of the river. The bearers, decking and kick rails were also constructed from recycled plastic in order to create a final structure that would last much longer than a standard timber boardwalk.
Using the recycled plastic allowed Aquascience to maximise the smooth sinuosity of the boardwalk meanders, carefully arranging decking and bending kick rails to get the best finish. At the termination of the boardwalk, a wide fanning access ramp was created to maximise the accessibility of the boardwalk. Several passing places were also built into the design, allowing all users to get the most out of the boardwalk.
The boardwalk has been very well received and is a popular route for dog walkers, cyclists or people just wishing to enjoy the river walk. Future prospective clients have contacted Aquascience based on what they have seen at the Salisbury boardwalk.
