Hiltingbury Lakes are a series of small fishing lakes in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire. They are inline lakes connected by a series of weir control structures that make sure there is enough water in them for fishing purposes. Aquascience were contacted by Eastleigh Borough Council at the start of 2020 because one of their engineers had condemned the most downstream weir stating it was susceptible to a catastrophic collapse event which would put several downstream properties in risk of a severe flood.
After discussions with our retained structural engineer, Aquascience decided that plastic sheet piles were the optimum, as most cost effective, quick solution. Using a specialist driving head attached to an 8t excavator, the plastic piles were driven until they were twice as far in the ground as what remained above ground level. For added structure, king posts were also driven through the piles and the end pile was bolted into the concrete weir system.
Upon completion, Aquascience had successfully managed to plug all the leaks to the bank and support the weir. The bank and access were regraded and tidied in order to maintain the amenity value of the fishing lakes.
